SCIBSW: Uppercase Bookshop
Old wood - old books - new discoveries!
What’s your favorite smell of a bookstore? If only I could bottle the smell of old wood and old books - and then send it over the screen. I would if I could! It’s one of the best combinations out there - I seriously didn’t want to leave! (and neither did my kids!)
Branding color palette
I noticed many different branding colors - shown in the pictures. I am curious to see what a mood board would create and what 3-5 final colors we could narrow down to.
Branding typography
I noticed three different fonts, in different places being used. The Facebook banner text did match their website, however - yay!
Cohesive branding
The IG page is honestly what I would expect from a small, independent book store - it is full of a mix of reading and book memes, photos of the owner, book and reading related content, and community events. Lots of colors, lots of books, lots of fun!
The website has some amazing features - the media section was a very pleasant surprise! It has a video from the mayor of Snohomish, an interview with one of the co-owners, and of an author promoting small bookstores.
I did find that what was lacking was an about section! I luckily was able to determine one of the co-owners and a little about their story from one of the videos. I would have loved to see some information too, on the historic log cabin they reside in. What an important aspect of their branding!
On their social media, I did notice a lack of cohesive branding. I saw a mix of logos, a mix of colors, and not much consistency. I also did see color - lots of color. Which matches beautifully with their store interior.
I would love to help Uppercase with branding, solidifying typography, a color palette, and finalizing a logo that is cohesive and fits their brand!
Personal Branding
When cruising their website and social media, I noticed that their Instagram account is much more full than their website or Facebook. There is a lack of photos on facebook, and a decent amount of photos of their products and what they offer.
I did notice a few photos and videos with one of the owners, but overall, a lack of WHO is behind Uppercase. I would love to have customers, current and future, really learn WHO is Uppercase Books, WHY Uppercase book exists, and HOW to keep a bond going. I noticed in one of the videos on their website, Leah McNatt talked about how she grew up in a bookstore and how excited she is for her daughter to do the same. I would love to see more content on why she loves it, the wonderful mother - daughter bond of the owners, and how they can share that with everyone.
Leah also mentioned her connection to her frequent customers - when she gets a new book in, she knows exactly who needs to get it and she gives them a call. How beautiful! I would love to see more of that connection shown on their website and social media - for the world to see!
Final Thoughts
I have driven by this store for years, always wondering what awaits me inside...and now I know. It's full of the most amazing smell, it's full of row after row of treasures, both new and old. My kids even sat down and started reading books in the small children's area. Needless to say, we will be back, and we will make this store a part of our lives. Thank you for providing a wonderful haven of books amidst this technology centered world.
