What To Wear for Head Shots

February 10, 2026 — Head Shots, Branding

Congratulations!

You have booked head shots. Now what?

You did the research in finding the right photographer for you and have a session booked, but now what? What do you wear?

Here are a few ideas to get your mind going for your session!

The examples shown give you an idea of how small things can change within the same session.

“Be who you are and be that well.”

Bring a sweater, jacket, and blazer

The key here is strategy and time efficiency. Choose a stellar top to start with, and then layer with a sweater and/or jacket. Changing up just the top layer combined with a change in background can bring a whole different feel to an image and it only takes a few seconds to switch! Maybe you can't pick between your two favorite sweaters - bring them both! The more, the better!

Tie...or no tie?

I love me a great tie! Neck ties or bow ties, they are both so -- looking! Create a more professional look with the tie on, then loosen up and have fun with a tie free look!

Want to get even more fancy? Bring an extra tie for a different look and feel! It only takes a moment to tie the tie, so have fun and bring a few to choose from!

Different Hair style / clip

Elise looks fabulous in both images and these were both taken on the same day. Now, we did have a much longer session, but just changing the hair and adding glasses can give the photo a completely different look.

You can start with your hair up, all nicely done and then take it down for a more relaxed look, or you can style it down and clip it up later on for a more casual look.

When it comes to head shots and personal branding, variety is paramount.

Hat vs no hat, that is the question

Now, not everyone looks fantastic in a hat. But sometimes, a hat is what makes you authentic. I know many people find themselves gravitating to a hat or beanie as their normal wear, so please! Let's incorporate that into your session!

One shirt, two shirt...

If you are fast at changing or if you have a longer session, a change of shirt/clothing is the BEST way to get variety and change within your photos.

These photos shown were taken during a very short session, so no change of background happened, but just imagine if there was a different background? A whole new image in just a few minutes.

So there you have it, 5 ways you can quickly bring variety and change into your session, without losing your authenticity.
